Lisa Holmes (Director, Centre for Child and Family Research at Loughborough University) presents on the cost calculator for children’s services. This was produced by her team of researchers at Loughborough University and seeks to link children’s needs, the services provided, the costs incurred and the outcomes in terms of children’s welfare.

Key points discussed in the presentation were:

• The conceptual underpinning of the tool (i.e. using the child as the unit of analysis)
• The application of the tool to various groups of children
• The benefits of the tool and of getting data earlier in terms of expenditure
